Our Work
When Sterling Colomb announced the creation of this foundation, he said, "We will remember Dené by bringing good into the world, by helping other children learn to love reading the way Dené did, and by helping other young women realize their dreams to replace Dené's unfulfilled one."
These are some of the things we are doing:
Annual Cancer Walk
Dené's mother died of breast cancer just seven months before Dené herself was
killed. During and after her mother's long battle with
cancer, Dené volunteered at every possible opportunity to help raise more funds
for cancer research. The Colomb Foundation continues Dené's work by sponsoring our annual
"Steppin' for Pappie" cancer walk to support cancer research.
Annual Health Fair
Every year the Colomb Foundation sponsors a health fair to provide basic
health screening to members of the community who may have restricted access to medical services.
Volunteer medical personnel give free blood pressure checks, give out free mammagram vouchers,
make mammogram appointments, conduct free eye exams, provide free immunizations for kids, and
answer all kinds of health questions.
Teen Summit
Our annual Teen Summit puts career information, conflict resolution discussions, safety tips, and vital health facts all together into one big infofest with lots of music, food and fun. Last year, we hosted about 500 teens aged 13-18.
Breast Cancer Awareness
The Colomb Foundation sponsors promotions to remind women of the importance of breast exams.
Recently, we helped to promote Breast Cancer Awareness month by issuing a mass mailing to women
in the Lafayette area. Our postcard explained the risks of breast cancer and urged regular
self-exams, annual mammograms and to be alert for the distinctive signs of inflammatory
breast cancer: swelling, discharge, unusual warmth, or a stubborn bruise.
Stay Alert and Vigilant Everywhere
Our SAVE program teaches women and children the best methods for keeping
themselves safe. Be sure to read and remember our Ten Safety Tips!
